McFly companion app
McFly’s "Unsaid Things" released in October 2012, published by Random House, offers an in-depth look into the lives of the band. Speaking openly and with their trademark humour, Tom, Danny, Harry and Dougie share the stories of their own lives and that of the band that catapulted them into the publics’ consciousness.
The objective of the app was to reach out to existing fans as well as appeal to a new generation of technically savvy fans, in order to promote the book launch, increase awareness and book sales and generate an additional revenue stream.
Mobile is an increasingly important channel for publishers to bring to life a more immersive experience around the stories their books tell. Nimbletank created iOS and Android apps that are designed to further enhance the experience of the book by offering fans additional digital content such as photos, videos, audio bonuses and extracts from the book. The apps also contain an augmented reality experience powered by Aurasma. Through scanning the front and back covers, users can unlock a host of exclusive content, including a special acoustic session from the quartet. Retailing at £1.49, the app also gives fans of the band an immersive social experience, allowing them to share pictures and trivia with their friends and access content on the go, whilst generating an additional revenue stream for the publisher.
With over 4,500 downloads to date, in the first week the app reached no 40 across paid apps, no 2 in paid entertainment and no 1 highest grossing app in entertainment in the iTunes app store. And Dougie from McFly thought the app was 'Appsolutely brilliant'!
